The price of Telegram native coin, Toncoin, soared by more than five percent following the release of a statement by its CEO Pavel Durov regarding his detainment in Paris.

The native coin of The Open Network developed by Telegram spiked at $4.7 after Durov received support from the crypto community. It surpassed the price of Bitcoin and other assets, which continued trading below three percent in the past 24 hours.

In a Telegram post uploaded on Friday, Durov criticized the French authorities’ narrative. He said that they could have used numerous points of contact to address any issue with the platform.

“If a country is unhappy with an internet service, they can start legal action against it instead of charging a CEO with crimes committed by third parties,” Durov said.

Telegram CEO’s arrest

Authorities arrested Pavel Durov in an airport north of Paris on 25 August. He has since been charged with suspected complicity in allowing illicit transactions, drug trafficking, fraud, and the spread of child sex abuse images on Telegram.

The crypto community heavily criticized the detainment. According to CoinMarketCap, Toncoin’s value sharply dropped by 14.71% following the arrest.

Paris police questioned Durov for four days. They claimed that he may be responsible for other people’s wrong use of the platform.

Durov denied the allegations in his Telegram post and pledged to improve the use of Telegram. He started this process internally and said he would share more details on the progress.

“We hear voices saying that it’s not enough. Telegram’s abrupt increase in user count to 950M caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform. That’s why I made it my personal goal to ensure significant improvement”, Durov said.
